Thanks for the Russion clipping and sends him his resent sermon "The vulgar rich and the plunderer poor"; sent him another batch of books; had a great visit with him and he gave him new impetus in the Social Gospel; reminds him to send him autographed "The Shoes of Happyness"; reminds him also of the article he has to submit to "the Christian Advocate."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
